Paddle Into Fitness’ Gillian Gibree SUP Yoga Tips

Yoga on a SUP board helps work out rarely used muscles Yoga isn’t easy to begin with (not many people can readily twist themselves into figurative pretzels), and it’s gotten progressively tougher thanks to variations like sweat-inducing Bikram and inverted trapeze yoga. But no form of yoga fires up those little (and rarely used) muscles quite like stand-up paddleboarding yoga, the art of stretching out while perched on a SUP board in the middle of the water. SUP yoga is relatively new, too, with the first weekly classes sprouting up in San Diego about three years ago. The woman behind the craze? Paddle Into Fitness’ Gillian Gibree, the lanky blonde beauty you may recognize as one of the models from the new Roxy Outdoor Fitness campaign. The Massachusetts native grew up life guarding, ocean swimming, and surfing on Cape Cod, but it wasn’t until she moved to San Diego that she decided to combine two of her favorite fitness pursuits—yoga and standup paddleboarding—and launch the first set of weekly SUP yoga classes through her company, “Paddle Into Fitness.” Here, we catch up with Gillian to get the scoop on the benefits of yoga on the water and her tips for getting started. Fit Tip: Foam Rolling Basics

In this video, Christina Sinclair from Beach Babe Fitness explains how essential foam rolling is to you exercise routine. Foam rolling is an excellent tool to reduce pain and prevent injury. It can be integrated into your exercise routine the same as you would incorporate stretching. Note: Notice how she didn’t mention rolling out the IT (short for iliotibial) Band? Located on the outside of the leg, the IT band is a ligament and not a muscle. Don’t foam roll here because a) you can’t really stretch (or lengthen) a ligament b) you’re likely to damage the IT band causing inflammation. Fitness Tip: Running Shoe Lacing Techniques

When most runners purchase their running shoes from a specialty running store they are usually already cross-laced and ready to go. Or are they? Did you know there are different ways that you can lace your shoes to make them more comfortable or to help customize your shoes for your feet? Here are some of the more common shoe lacing patterns that help combat some common shoe issues.  First, let’s cover the LOOP LACING LOCK. This technique can be used in a number of different lacing patterns to insure a tight and snug fit anywhere along the eye row of your shoe, depending on where your laces seem to be slipping. In this example, the loop lacing lock is at the top of the shoe. The shoe was cross-laced as usual to the top of the shoe. To accomplish the loop lacing lock, put each lace end back into the same hole it just exited, leaving a small loop on each side. Then thread each loose end through the loop on the opposite side of the shoe. Pull tight to make loops smaller. Then tie shoe as usual. PROBLEM: High Instep Near the toe of the shoe, start lacing with the cross-lacing technique. Once …

Rockin’ Vinyasa Yoga Playlist

There’s nothing like the perfect power song to get you pumped up for an intense workout. So why not apply the same musical motivation to your yoga practice? With artists like Nelly, The Fugees, and The XX serenading you through your downward dogs and warrior poses, this workout playlist puts a seriously modern spin on the ancient practice. “But if yoga is supposed to be about quieting your mind, isn’t the music distracting?” you might ask. To the contrary, the music helps people get out of their own heads and focus more on the poses. If you play a very strong song, the poses become stronger. If you play a relaxing song at the end, it helps you relax. The music really helps the practice, and helps you get a better workout. Rockin’ Vinyasa Playlist: 1. Daughter Darling Sweet Shadows – Dust in the Wind 2. Infinity – The XX 3. It’s Time – Imagine Dragons 4. Killing Me Softly With His Song – The Fugees 5. Love Is My Religion – Ziggy Marley 6. Sweet Disposition – The Temper Trap 7. Feel This Moment (feat. Christina Aguilera) – Pitbull 8. Just a Dream – Nelly 9. Never Tear Us Apart – INXS 10. Personal Jesus – Depeche Mode 11. Come Together – The …

Repeat the intervals as many times as you can. Wear: LoveSurf Running Wear 2. Indoor Addiction: Lap Swimming    Outdoor Alternative: Open Water Swimming Sick of getting stuck behind a slow stroker in a pool the size of a bathtub?
